Candorville

Darrin Bell, artist of Rudy Park and creator/writer/artist of the wonderful Candorville is our guest on show 39. We discuss his clear and cutting social commentary, his journalistic past, and Star Trek. Darrin is such a hard-working guy, and as if two comic strips weren’t enough, he owns and operates the famous  ToonTalk forum board. Stick around after the end music and hear some stuff that Brian recorded when we didn’t know he was recording, and posted without our permission. Laughing

Ah, we do have fun on Comics Coast To Coast.

Our webcomic pick of the week this week is the beautifully done ‘Worked ‘ over at Comics Sherpa. Check it out.

ALSO: NPR is running a very interesting piece on the character of Charlie Brown. You can find it here , or find the podcast and just download it at iTunes. Go to the iTunes home page, and in the search window type: NPR: At Your Leisure Podcast. Then download episode 41. I think it may be at the end, so you have to listen through a bit about Oprah's closet, then a spot about Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles, but finally the piece about Charlie Brown is there. Just like our podcast, there's stuff you have to suffer through to get to the good stuff.

Episode 38 – The Gary Clark Interview (Swamp)

Swamp Book    We make our 4th international call, on show #38. Not too shabby for three comic geeks with a brush pen and a dream. We've been to Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada once or twice, and this time we go DOWN UNDER to Brisbane Australia to have a chat with the artist/creator of "SWAMP ", Gary Clark. Wow, soon we might have to change the name of the show!

Click the image to the left there, to order Gary's new book, "Full Power Duck". Interviewing Gary, along with being fun, was very interesting. It's great to get an international perspective on this business. We found out what Gary has gone through in trying to reach an international audience and how he cracked Europe! Anyone out there, after listening to Gary's story, are urged to write us here and tell us your comments and any helpful hints you may be able to impart to him. We'll be sure to pass them on.

This was a jam-packed show, so here's how it breaks down: First up, we read an article from last week's San Francisco Chronicle about their comics page. They substituted one of my favorite strips: Candorville for the vacationing Gary Trudeau and asked for comments (being a concerned comics page devotee, I of course wrote in). Well, what they heard from people was fairly surprising. Not as much concerning Candorville, as much as all of the other comics on the page. We'd love to hear what you think about what they found.Pink

Then we welcome an old friend back to the show, Mr. Mike Witmer calls in to give us an update on his strip: Pinkerton .

It would appear that the critters at Pinkerton Park have found a syndication home at Th3rd World Publishing! Click HERE to check that out. Congratulations, Mike.

Finally, an item about a 16 year old fan in Brisbane Australia named Declan Byrne. Declan is an up and coming cartoonist who is a great admirer of Mr. Clark and at his urging, I contacted Gary for this interview. Although Declan could not join us for the interview (he is 16 people, no point draggin' the boy out of school for something he can always listen to later), we asked a few questions on his pimply behalf. Declan shows amazing potential for such a young Padawan and his strip Duxter shows a very sharp writing style that can only get better as he gets older and keeps working. So thanks Declan, keep at it, and this Foster's is fer you, mate.

G'day!

Episode 36 – The Yenny Interview

yenny

The great David Alvarez is the subject of our latest Q and A. He is the creator and artist of the comic 'Yenny' .

We make our 4th international call in this show, this time to David's home in San Juan Puerto Rico. David talked to us about his great comic, his rise to comic glory, and his prolific history with Warner Brothers and Disney. It's a great interview with an incredible talent.

This is a very special interview for me (Justin) because I've always wanted so badly to actually speak with David. When I started this web comics thing about 3 and a half years ago, David was instrumental in guiding my perspective and  extremely encouraging. He was the first friend I made in this web comics fraternity and Yenny is still my favorite web comic of all.

 Yenny's MySpace is www.myspace.com/yennylopez

Here's our webcomic picks of the week:

Thurbear by Casey Shaw, and the new and improved Windsor and Albert by Matthew Thompson.

Episode 35 – The Paul Gilligan Interview

pooch

We interview the great Paul Gilligan on this one. He's the creative talent who brings us the wonderful Pooch Cafe' each and every day. Paul discusses his process, his own pet situation, and his Pooch Cafe' animated movie deal with Sony.

Paul is Canadian (Hooraaaaay!) and he's just great to listen to. He's articulate, funny, and has the greatest li'l Canadian accent. So listen closely and you'll hear what that's all abewt.

Fair warning: Brian and I discuss politics at the end of the show.  Now, before you all roll your eyes, we don't get in a big fight, like you might imagine. But we fairly discuss this insane race (keep in mind this was recorded a few weeks ago, just after Super Tuesday) and what we think is going to happen. Brian touts the greatnes of Bobby Kennedy and how Obama reminds him of Bobby. Of course I whole-heartedly agree. Laughing

The web comic pick of the week is a real interesting one that comes to us via Comics Sherpa . It's called Dro-Mo and I just love it. It's funny, thought provoking, and there's no text so it's a fast read. This is exactly the kind of comic strp that the future comic audience will be gravitating toward. It caters to a short attention span, it works in any country in the world, it's clean, it's ideas are brilliant, and it's a great fit for a hand held device (like a cell phone or pda) which is where people are going to be getting their news more and more often as we go along in this century. I'd say, be on the lookout for more one panel strips like this. Dro-Mo is definitely ahead of the curve.

So over there to the right is the link to the iTunes download: "Fetch!"

Yes, THE Wiley Miller of Non Sequitur graced us with a wonderfully informative and entertaining interview.

In part one of this eye-opening conversation, Wiley tells us what is wrong and right with everything cartoony. The artists’ approach, the point of view one should have as a commercial entity, and most interestingly- how to think like an editor.

Wiley has spent many years working at newspapers and he knows how newspapers think and how they approach comic strips. He also tells us how he broke barriers in working for new approaches in coloring the Sunday pages.

Wiley is good enough to open this treasure chest to us and we are all the better for it. Get ready to scrap all that you think you know.

Wiley’s new book, “Attack Of The Volcano Monkeys “, features the continuing adventures of Ordinary Basil.

After the interview, Brian and Justin talk about the mechanics of illustrating the LAST FRAME of your comic. Do you make it huge and spastic- thereby directing the reader’s eye to it before they read it and therefore spoiling the joke, or do you make the first frame have the most visual impact to lead the reader? Or does an explosion at the end leave the reader wanting more? Hmmmmmmm….

We also plug the webcomic Kevin and Kell by Bill Holbrook. Check that out, it’s great.

Justin and Tom also ramble on about upcoming summer movies, more ideas about niche marketing your strip, and general wackiness.

Our webcomic of the week is "The Barons ," by Ian Culley, and our Comic Strip Theatre comes to us from "Chicken Wings ," by Stefan and Michael Strasser!

This weeks intro/outtro music is 'Until The Road Ends' by Chris McKay and The Critical Darlings
