On this very special episode, Tom and Justin interview the Mutts’ best friend, Patrick McDonnell.

Patrick discusses his wonderful comic strip Mutts , his enlightened point of view on life and living, and his work with the Humane Society and other important animal rescue efforts.

Patrick is a very warm and generous guy who gave us our longest interview ever. He’s also very soft-spoken, so if when you are listening to this you are wondering why Tom and I sound so loud, please understand that it’s not because we wanted to sort of ‘sit a little bit higher than our guest’, it’s just that that is how the recording went.

We hope you enjoy this interview and find it as helpful and inspiring as I do. After I listened to it, I couldn’t wait to get behind my drawing table again.

If you have comments, please let us know here or on our web board .

Thanksh!

Episode 29 – Just The Guys

 O

We interview "O" in this show for a while. Proudly, he's the first South American cartoonist we've had on the show, and the writer artist of Commissioned Comic.com. "O" tells us all about the wackyness of celebrating the New Year down in Columbia. Commissioned Comic is celebrating it's 1000th comic, so we congratulate "O" and we hope to have him on again soon.

Other than that, it's just us three idiots talking. We talk about drawing under pressure, being a cartoonist parent, and what we have in store for 2008.

The web comic pick of the week is Jenny The Military Spouse by Julie Negron.  A wonderful strip about the life of a devoted military couple maintaining their marriage through the ultimate long-distance relationship. Go to her website and visit Julie's MySpace page and blog.

Comic Strip Theater this week puts Mingo on the stage. Mingo, by Mike Sieber, is a very funny comic strip over on Comics Sherpa and we perform the December 25th strip.

Episode 28 – The Norm Feuti Interview

ImageTom flies solo for the Holidays and interviews Norm Feuti, the former wage-slave behind the excellent syndicated strip "Retail ."

We talk about writing what you know, inspiration that comes from those horrible jobs we've all held, and especially about Norm's new book, "Pretending You Care, The Retail Employee Handbook."  This ain't no compilation, folks…this is a real live book!  Enjoy!

Episode 26 – The Night Owls!

 Owls

JT and Tom take time to talk to the terrific, titanic, twisted, Timony twins of Twin Comics.com. They just got syndicated YESTERDAY, a few hours before this interview, with ZUDAcomics.com! Their comic is named Night Owls and it's a real winner. Well, it didn't actually win, the thing was so bloody good that Zuda just opened the front door nice and wide and let 'em stroll in without the nuisance of entering the contest!

We unpeel the many layers of Bobby and Peter Timony, and reveal their past as movie stars, improv comedians, and "Mud-Monkeys"! (Ya' gota hear this one)

Samples of their comedy short films, The Mook Brothers can be found on You Tube here

Also on Jay Leno's 'Pitch To America'. Click here.

They are amazingly talented guys and promise to be good friends of the show. We'll be hearing a lot from the Timony twins, and so will you. Night Owls is a wonderful piece of work.

Justin Thompson had a chance to sit down and spend a little one on one time with the very talented Jerry Van Amerongen creator of Ballard Street .

Due to the our crazy holiday schedules we recorded this on a Wednesday night and Tom was unable to attend so it’s just me (Brian) and Justin this week.

Our webcomic pick of the week is Winsor and Albert  by Matthew Thompson (not related to Justin.)

Image This is the cover to Jerry’s latest book, “Practicing Human Skills. It’s available through Amazon.com or from Jerry’s own website, https://www.ballardstreet.com/.

This week we slow down for Speed Bump creator and genius Dave Coverly, who joins us in yet another nightmare SKYPE-fest. I don’t know what it is about the two single-panel cartoonists we have had on this show, but like the Dan Piraro interview, we had major technical problems with the SKYPE network yet again. But, after we adjust to the time-lag and get back on our feet, the interview really lightens up. Full credit goes to Dave Coverly and his open, friendy, and generous nature, which kept him from hanging up.

Dave discusses his early career as an editorial cartoonist for the Herald-Times in Bloomington Indiana, and what is different about creating a single panel strip versus a multi-panel one. He also takes part in our new 5 Questions in 5 Minutes segment.

So give it a listen and please be forewarned about or time-lag and volume problems. They really are out of our hands and well, the show is free.

Our web comic theater is from the November 15th, ExtraLife by fellow cartoonist and podcaster Scott Johnson .

Episode 23 – We Sally Forth with Francesco

Francesco Marciuliano author of 'Sally Forth' mixes it up with us with us on this show.

SF

Warning: the following links are hysterical, but not all that kid-friendly.

It's a pretty silly, fun, crazy interview and we even get to talk to a real stand up comic, when the lovely Sara Benincasa drops in to Francesco's apartment to say hi. Sara actually comes to this guys house! (for love)

'Ces is a great interview, very funny, and he lets us in on the legacy of Sally Forth and what it's like from a writer's perspective to collaborate with an artist on a strip. He has his own blog, Francesco Explains It All.

A few years ago, he wrote and drew the comic strip Medium Large, which he plans to revive soon. He also writes the blog/performance series Conversations with Dad. He's a very funny writer, go read this stuff and see!

Our web comic Theater is from the Nov. 8th Pinkerton by Mike Witmer.

Our web comic pick of the week is Mongrels by Stevie Schulz.

Episode 22 – Make Like A Tree And Leave

{enclose cccep22.mp3}

Stew

We talk to Scott Metzger about ending his old strip, Tree, and starting a totally new one. His brand new strip has just debuted and is called Stewart . Stewart is a Bison who lives in Golden Gate park in San Francisco and dreams of going out on his own.

Scott talks about being a Panel Mammal and what it's like to just let go of a strip that you've worked on for over two years. It's a very insightful conversation for struggling cartoonists and how to look at your own strips from a business perspective.

Comic strip theater this week is the inagural strip of Stewart. Click here to follow along.

Our web comic pick of the week (besides Stewart of course) is The Sticks. In an astounding conjunction of shared good taste, this was coincidentally Scott and Justin's pick of the week.

Episode 21 – Halloween With Lio

{enclose cccep21.mp3}

Yes, your eyes don't deceive you, this week we talk to Mark Tatulli of Lio and Heart of the City .

Mark really hits the ground runnin' and joins right in on the fun. This is the kind of interview we just love, loose, fun, and silly, and Mark keeps right up with us. You'll also hear what a terrifying week Brian and Tom had. True terror coast to coast, friends!

Mark discusses his brand new Lio movie deal and just what it takes to maintain two syndicated comic strips AND cope with Hollywood at the same time. You'll also find out what particular kind of junkie he is, and why he now calls me "meat".

Our web comic pick of the week is The Great Khan , by Ross Curtis.

It's one of our best shows so far, hope you all enjoy it.

Audible Easter Egg: Listen through to the completion of the end music, Brian spliced in some "after-show" nonsense.

Cheers!
