This week Tom and Justin interview the wonderfully talented Alex Hallett. We are proud to have Alex as our first woman cartoonist and she is a wonderful guest. She comes from England and moved to New Zealand, and created a comic strip about penguins who come from the Southern Hemisphere and migrate to the Northern Hemisphere. Well, they always say to, “Write what you know.”

“Alex Hallatt is a freelance cartoonist and writer based in New Zealand, with clients in the US, NZ, Australia and the UK. She provides cartoon illustrations for newspapers, books,magazines and other printed material, as well as creating flash animatione-cards and web sites.” for TV, games, corporate presentations.

Alex has just informed me that she is starting in her first Aussie paper this week – The Age in Melbourne is giving her  a try out, replacing For Better or For Worse. Funny how we were talking about For Better or For Worse during the show and… well there ya’ go.

It's the San Diego Comic Con 2008 Recap, hosted by Justin Thompson and Tom Racine!  We had a blast there this year, wandering around the place and talking to some fun people.  We start off the show recapping our time there, and then we play Tom's interviews with several great people.

Tom: First off, I talk to an old friend of the show, Lex Fajardo , who was at his table with the just released "Kid Beowulf and the Blood-Bound Oath ."  It's always great to catch up with Lex, so listen in as he lays out his future plans for his epic series!

Then I get a few good minutes with Howard Tayler, the mad genius behind "Schlock Mercenary ."  We chat about his various Con experiences and also about his new podcast over at www.writingexcuses.com.  It's a 15 minute podcast aimed at genre writers, where he and two published sci-fi/fantasy authors address issues like character development, motivation, plot…all the things you need to learn about to be a successful writer.  He's entertaining as heck, so if you see him at one of the many Cons he talks about, be sure to say hi.

Next, I get a great 20 minutes with Andrea Romano , animation casting director extraordinaire. "Batman," "Superman," "Justice League," "Tiny Toons," "Freakazoid," and now "SpongeBob"…this woman's done it all, and was delightful and gracious to boot.  We talk about celebrity voice work and how we don't like stunt casting, what it's like to cast a legendary character, and animation voice work in general.

Finally, my old college buddy Walt and I got into a sneak preview of the new Ben Stiller/Jack Black/Robert Downy, Jr. film, "Tropic Thunder."  I had my recorder with me, so we did a quick pre- and post-movie chat just for fun. Great film…I haven't laughed at a comedy like this in a long time.  Highly recommended! Then Justin and I talk some more about the interviews and wrap it up. Got about an hour twenty to waste? Get listenin!

Anyway, go there and get inspired. Kiskaloo is everything that a cartoon should be. For me anyway.

Really, I would recommending carpooling for a year, then putting all of that gas money that you save in a big glass jar, and blowing it all on a great time at next year's ComicCon. But you have to get your ticketrs early, they sell out like, a month in advance.

This show, we interview David Reddick again. We had so much more to cover last week that we didn’t get to, thanks to david’s natural enthusiasm for cartooning (which we friggin LOVE), that we asked him back again. So if you didn’t catch last week’s blurb, David is a professional cartoonist and creator of the comic strips “Legend of Bill ” at LegendofBill.com, “The Trek Life” for CBS/ STARTREK.COM, “Gene’s Journal ” and “Rod & Barry ” at Roddenberry.com, and he is a full-time cartoonist at Paws, Inc., where he works on the “Garfield ” comic strip, publishing and licensing. David was an award-winning staff cartoonist at a daily newspaper for 6 years where his editorial cartoons and single-panel cartoons were distributed to newspapers nationwide through Artizans Syndicate , Scripps Howard News Service and CNHI News Service. David also produces comics and cartoons for magazines like Star Trek Magazine, Knights of the Dinner Table, Nickelodeon and Scholastic’s The New York Times Upfront, to name a few, and has created comic book work for IDW Publishing and Tokyopop, has created product designs for companies like Paws, Inc., Paramount Pictures, CBS Studios, Roddenberry Productions, Canson, Inc. and the NCAA, creates mobile content for providers like CBSMobile and ROK Comics in the UK, and his abstract and pop art paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Indianapolis, Florida, Michigan, England and France, and he’s painted wall murals in Japan. David is also part of the growing power-house collective of web-cartoonists over at Tall Tale Features .

 The Knight Life

Justin Thompson (MythTickle) and Lex Fajardo (Kid Beowulf) sit down face to face with the outstanding Keith Knight . We interviewed him during his visit to the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center back on May 18th. Keith may be the most enterprising cartoonist we’ve interviewed on this show, the guy does the K Chronicles, Th(ink), contributes to Salon.com, ESPN, and draws Father O’Flannity’s Hot Tub Confessions for Mad Magazine, and just had a brand new strip titled The Knight Life syndicated by United Media. Aside from the latter, all of these things have been self syndicated. He has hustled his work for years, and we talk to him about that. We also discuss all of his strips, how and why he often writes himself as a main character, and what it’s like to constantly work. He also performs with his L.A. based hip hop band called The Marginal Prophets .

The K Chronicles won the prestigious and cool Harvey Award (2007) , the comic book industry’s oldest and most respected award, for Best Syndicated Strip or Panel!  The K Chronicles also won the 2007 and 2008 Glyph Award for Best Comic Strip!! A fascinating man who could not properly be done justice in this amateur interview,  but we do pretty good.

We talk for a while to Mike Witmer (Pinkerton ), the brainchild behind the newest webcomic conglomerate called TallTale features ! A great idea with some of the most innovative and talented web cartoonists toiling today. It all just started, get in on the ground floor and bookmark TallTale Features !

Darrin Bell, artist of Rudy Park and creator/writer/artist of the wonderful Candorville is our guest on show 39. We discuss his clear and cutting social commentary, his journalistic past, and Star Trek. Darrin is such a hard-working guy, and as if two comic strips weren’t enough, he owns and operates the famous  ToonTalk forum board. Stick around after the end music and hear some stuff that Brian recorded when we didn’t know he was recording, and posted without our permission.

Ah, we do have fun on Comics Coast To Coast.

    We make our 4th international call, on show #38. Not too shabby for three comic geeks with a brush pen and a dream. We've been to Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada once or twice, and this time we go DOWN UNDER to Brisbane Australia to have a chat with the artist/creator of "SWAMP ", Gary Clark. Wow, soon we might have to change the name of the show!

Click the image to the left there, to order Gary's new book, "Full Power Duck". Interviewing Gary, along with being fun, was very interesting. It's great to get an international perspective on this business. We found out what Gary has gone through in trying to reach an international audience and how he cracked Europe! Anyone out there, after listening to Gary's story, are urged to write us here and tell us your comments and any helpful hints you may be able to impart to him. We'll be sure to pass them on.

  This was a jam-packed show, so here's how it breaks down: First up, we read an article from last week's San Francisco Chronicle about their comics page. They substituted one of my favorite strips: Candorville for the vacationing Gary Trudeau and asked for comments (being a concerned comics page devotee, I of course wrote in). Well, what they heard from people was fairly surprising. Not as much concerning Candorville, as much as all of the other comics on the page. We'd love to hear what you think about what they found.

Then we welcome an old friend back to the show, Mr. Mike Witmer calls in to give us an update on his strip: Pinkerton .

It would appear that the critters at Pinkerton Park have found a syndication home at Th3rd World Publishing! Click HERE to check that out. Congratulations, Mike. 

Finally, an item about a 16 year old fan in Brisbane Australia named Declan Byrne. Declan is an up and coming cartoonist who is a great admirer of Mr. Clark and at his urging, I contacted Gary for this interview. Although Declan could not join us for the interview (he is 16 people, no point draggin' the boy out of school for something he can always listen to later), we asked a few questions on his pimply behalf. Declan shows amazing potential for such a young Padawan and his strip Duxter shows a very sharp writing style that can only get better as he gets older and keeps working. So thanks Declan, keep at it, and this Foster's is fer you, mate.
