Episode 67 – The Brooke McEldowney Interview

The Artist: Born in Charleston, West Virginia, McEldowney grew up in Florida and now lives in Maine with his wife and two daughters. He attended Allegheny College and majored first in biology, then changed to art. From there he went to the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied the viola and got both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music. He also studied and performed at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Following that he worked concurrently as a professional violist, music critic, and cartoonist. He was assistant editor of Opus, a classical music magazine, and has had cartoons in magazines such as Yankee, Opus, and Pulse. His first cartoon sale was to Punch. He has also had music articles and reviews in many magazines, and he designs sets, writes, and composes for the theater. (Source: Wikipedia)

Episode 66 – The Howard Tayler Interview

Howard TaylerThe Man: This week we talk with Howard Tayler of Schlock Mercenary. The online comic space opera. You can check out Howard’s comic at schlockmercenary.com

Howard graduated BYU with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition. He currently lives in Utah and is not afraid to talk about his life as a mormon, which is more than most cartoonists will reveal about their religious beliefs. He is married and has between 3-5 kids. He works full-time as a cartoonist, writing, drawing, and coloring Schlock Mercenary.

During the show Howard takes a break from coloring his comic at Dragon Keep to answer a volley of questions from me (Brian) and Justin. The first half of the show me and Howard get a little side tracked when we start talking about Dungeons & Dragons. But we still manage to ask some hard hitting questions about how he manages to make a living at doing Schlock Mercenary.

The second half of the show is at least as juicy as the first half as we talk about Howard’s background and what projects he is working on and what’s the future looking like for him.

The Comic: (Taken from Basic Training on the Schlock Mercenary website) Welcome to the 31st Century! Humans entered the galactic age over 900 years ago, and now do business with all manner of alien folk.

Some of the very MOST alien of those folk are the carbosilicate amorphs, like Sergeant Schlock here. He’s extremely strong, reasonably intelligent, and much, much faster than he looks. He also has a penchant for violence, and couldn’t be happier with his job as a mercenary. Just keep him supplied with enemies, ammo, and Genuine Imitation Ovalkwik, and he’ll stay happy. Or, you know, he could just sit in the bathtub and surf the Infomercial channel on the hypernet. There are few things he likes more than a good bathtub, or one of those epic infomercials like “Getting Your Doctorate in Engineering from Popeil University.”

Episode 65 – The Mark Bode Interview

Hi folks, Justin here, and first off I have to apologize. This week we talk with Mark Bode (Bo•dee) of Cobalt 60, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Miami Mice, The Lizard of Oz, and many other things. Mark is the son of the great Vaughn Bode who brought us Cheech Wizard, Sunpot, Junkwaffel, and many other great underground comics. I sound like such a #@%$ing @%$hole in this interview, and frankly I'm embarassed. I mean jeez, I'm like shot out of a cannon here. I listened to it this morning and was yelling at myself to calm the #@%$ down. But the damage is done. In my defense, I was very excited. See, Mark is carrying on with his father's work so #@%$ing well, and I've loved their work for so long. Probably most of my life as a cartoon fetishist. I fell in love with Da' Bode's work when I first saw Cheech Wizard in National Lampoon magazine, probably around 1970. I've followed Mark's work since the '80s and so to talk with him finally and ask him questions that I've had for almost 4 decades, just made me completely geek-out. So that's why I sound like such a $#!%-head. So please excuse me during this terrific interview with an amazing talent.

Mark talks about his body of work, including his recent graphic novels: Cobalt 60 (pictured left). Mark reveals that he has been talking with the great movie director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) about a Cobalt 60 movie. Snyder has been a huge fan of Cobalt 60 for several years and actually approached Mark about wanting to make it happen. Must be nice, huh? Can you imagine? The hottest director in Hollywood approaches you and says he wants to make your creation come to life? Pretty amazing. Mark talks about other projects like his huge murals, and his joining with PUMA in designing urban clothing based on Bode creations.

So give this show a listen comic creators, and get inspired by a wonderful artist and his great imagination. And please excuse the loud dork (me).

Episode 59 – The Best Scott Metzger Interview Yet!

Scott Metzger shows us what freelancing can get you (without protection).
HP
When we last spoke to Scott, he had switched his beloved and hilarious webcomic TREE to try something else. He has now discontinued this last strip, called Stewart the Bison (see link box at right) and he now has maybe the best freelance job EVER (see picture above)! No, he's not one of the characters in the fancy suits, strolling down the streets of San Francisco there, but he did design these characters. That's his art on the left. It's for a public health site and the taller character there is named "Healthy Penis". It's a site for syphyllus awareness. The link is here: www.healthypenis.org, but before clicking you may want to be sure that it is OK with your company's server to get cookies and a weblog from Healthy Penis. If you are at home, click away. There's nothing at all wrong with this site or Scott's work, it's great. It's for public health and should not be regarded as anything lewd or silly. But you know how some companies can get. But hell, we're supportive!

Will Scott Metzger ever bring back Stewart? Will he revive TREE? And as for this latest job, will he be able to keep it up??? These and many other pertinent and burning questions may or may not be answered on this show. Who cares, it's hilarious.

Join Brian, Justin, and Scott Metzger for one of the funniest shows we've done yet!
