San Diego Comic Con 2011 is in full swing and yesterday brought with it an exciting announcement from comic’s publisher Marvel. Yesterday Marvel announced that they would be releasing their titles digitally day and date with the physical copies in stores. Unlike DC with their new 52 initiative, which features a full line of day and date digital releases, Marvel will be matching the digital titles with their physical counterparts at a slower pace. Marvel will be switching their titles to digital day and date at convenient jumping on points, such as when new series begin or when current series begin new storylines. Marvel plans on starting this digital roll-out next week with the Spider-Man family of books and by the end of November will follow suit with the X-Men books.

I think this is a fantastic move by Marvel and a move that I believe more and more publishers will start pushing towards. Digital comics are a great way for these publishers to easily push their product to a wider range of people who may not have a comic book store down the road or even know that a comic book store exists near them. I am looking forward to what the future holds for digital comics and how the industry is going to mold itself around this new distribution method. This could be the shot in the arm that the industry needs to get out of its slump and with DC and Marvel on board it looks like digital comics are about to ramp up big time.
