We talk to Scott Metzger about ending his old strip, Tree, and starting a totally new one. His brand new strip has just debuted and is called Stewart . Stewart is a Bison who lives in Golden Gate park in San Francisco and dreams of going out on his own.
Scott talks about being a Panel Mammal and what it's like to just let go of a strip that you've worked on for over two years. It's a very insightful conversation for struggling cartoonists and how to look at your own strips from a business perspective.
Comic strip theater this week is the inagural strip of Stewart. Click here to follow along.
Our web comic pick of the week (besides Stewart of course) is The Sticks. In an astounding conjunction of shared good taste, this was coincidentally Scott and Justin's pick of the week.
These are the Comics Coast To Coast guys comics:
A Mission Deep by Brian Dunaway
Myth Tickle by Justin Thompson
Booksmarts by Tom Racine

|76.102.170.xxx |2007-11-02 09:00:38 Stephan PastisHey, I have an idea. On the "Actor's Studio" show, they have a set of questions they ask each actor at the end, sort of provocative ones they want quick answers to. I think you should do the same kind of thing at the end of every cartoonist interview. To get you started:
1) If you could any curse word in your comic without suffering any negative ramification, what would it be?
2) If you could sleep with one cartoon character, who would you choose?
3) What's the stupidest s...

|208.51.37.xxx |2007-11-02 10:16:51 Tom R.I think Justin and I bounced an idea like that around at the start of the whole CCC thing, but it never got off the ground. I love it! Great questions, Mr. P. At the risk of being presumptuous, here are my answers to those particular questions (and I think everyone should join in doing this... :
1. The proper comedic use of the word f*ck is always welcome. Has to be done just right, but can such great comedy impact. My wife and I love movies, and every year we always try to award the fil...

|67.101.113.xxx |2007-11-02 11:52:43 Scott MetzgerYes! "Inside The Cartoonist's Studio." For the segment, one of you could impersonate James Lipton. "What’s your favorite wooooord?"

|SAdministrator |2007-11-02 12:05:52 justjoustThese are just great, and Tom- I do remember talking about these questions a'la Bernard Pivot. This absolutely MUST be resurrected. We should use Stephan's questions but introduce them as 'questions by the revered Stephan Pastis.' Only say his name in a pretentious French accent, just like James Lipton on the Actor's Studio. "Stefaahn Pahsteees!"
Here are my answers:
1) If you could say any curse word in your comic without suffering any negative ramification, what would it be?
"C...

|208.51.37.xxx |2007-11-02 12:27:17 Tom R.I can't decide if I have totally gained or lost respect for Justin with his great Tinkerbelle description.
I think gained. It's brilliant.
And I think five questions is good...maybe we could always ask the first four, and rotate in a goofy one at the end for number 5 each week...

|63.241.157.xxx |2007-11-05 06:31:20 Mike Witmer - Poor TinkJustin...I...oh hell, nevermind. *shudder*
1) If you could any curse word in your comic without suffering any negative ramification, what would it be? I can live without cursing because those damn $&%!'s are fun. I'd love to be able to tackle subject matters like religion and midget juggling. THAT would be fun.
2) If you could sleep with one cartoon character, who would you choose? hmmm...Jessica Rabbit.
3) What's the stupidest strip you've ever written? Depends...what day is this? P...

|195.176.0.xxx |2007-11-05 06:37:04 mischoIt has been a great show guys - again. I have been listening to each one so far and I just thought I shoud tell you that I am still somewhere out there even if not very often commenting. It is always fun to listen to you and to your great guests. I wish Scott Metzger all the best with Stewart - so far it's great.
I think Stephan has opened a Pandoras box here. Anyway, if any guy wouldn't want to sleep with those girl from Frank Cho's Liberty Meadows strip, there is sure something wrong wit...

|67.101.113.xxx |2007-11-05 07:34:04 Scott MetzgerQuote:See, what I would do is, "get her" while her life force is fading out, until she's just about done. Then I'd get her in 'position' and start clapping my hands really fast and saying, "I DO believe in you, I DOOOO!" You know, get her moving around real good.
That's what I would do.
I am in awe of Justin.
1) H-E-Double Hockey Sticks. It's sad that "hell" is considered a curse word. But apparently newspapers think so. Don't need no F-bombs or anything like...

|76.88.78.xxx |2007-11-05 16:46:27 Alter EgoAww, guys that was a great episode! The bit about the Marmaduke guy spitting his ink on the paper had me in stitches.
You guys talked a little bit during the show about formal art classes and art majors. Why not talk to this gal (someone very interested in comics, and a senior in an art a school)? She's more into the comic book vein of storytelling, rather than newspaper strips, but her art is superb and even if you pass on talking to her, it's definitely worth it to check her art and com...

Anyway, I had a good time talking to you guys. Thanks again.
