Episode 128 – The Adrian Ropp Interview

1

Posted by admin | Posted in The Show | Posted on 12-10-2011

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Adrian Ropp of the webcomic Chim Chum and the Portly Samurai.

Chim Chum and the Portly Samurai is a daily (Monday through Friday) all-ages comic strip written and drawn by Adrian Ropp.  It follows the adventures of an as-yet-to-be-named samurai of questionable origins and his silent sidekick, a small fox named Chim Chum. The comic generally follows a single-panel gag format.  A larger, ongoing story remains under wraps, but is in the works.
THE PORTLY SAMURAI

The Portly Samurai hails from Ancient China, and has a long, sordid past he does not like to talk about.  Because of his obvious physical build, freelancing as a samurai is hardly a lucrative position.  P.S. relies on quick turns of fortune and the clever cuteness of his diminutive pal to maintain his dietary standards.

CHIM CHUM

Chim Chum the fox is something of an enigma.  There’s a lot of personality crammed into this small package, but little is actually known Chim Chum’s origins.  Equal parts best friend and main antagonist to the Portly Samurai, Chim Chum seems to enjoy being part of the Dysfunctional Duo.

Episode 127 – The Adam Huber Interview

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Adam Huber(t) of the webcomic Bug.

I’ve had a weird relationship with Bug.

Ever since I was a little kid I knew I wanted to become a cartoonist. The only problem was: I had no idea what kind of strip to draw. Throughout my life, I’ve created lots of characters. Hundreds really. And I was dissatisfied with every single one of ‘em. They were all cute, trite and hacky. Once I turned 30 I began to panic. I started having doubts that I’d ever find the the right character (or characters) for a comic strip. What I didn’t realize is that I already created the perfect character for my sense of humor fifteen years earlier.

It was my freshman year of high school and I was in English class. The teacher handed each of us these clear sheets of plastic and a marker. On the plastic was a sentence with a grammatical mistake. Our job was to write the sentence correctly on the sheet of plastic. The teacher would then collect them and place them one by one on an overhead projector so the whole class could see how you corrected the sentence. Then the teacher would hand out all new sentences and we’d repeat the process.

Episode 126 – The Joel Duggan Interview

1

Posted by admin | Posted in The Show | Posted on 13-09-2011

look at the size of this guys head!

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Joel Duggan of *Star Crossed Online. (correction: it is just StarCrossed…one word…uppercase ‘S’ uppercase ‘C’…the online is implied)

I was born and raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For those who aren’t in the know, Dartmouth is part of the city of Halifax, on the east coast of Canada. I’m happy to say I’ve made a career out of cartooning in my home town. Cartoonist. Illustrator. Animator. Over the past decade I’ve worn a lot of hats.

I started in animation. Animating, supervising various projects, design and development, and eventually production management. In 2004 I founded Animafax Entertainment, a small illustration and design studio. Over the last few years I’ve worked with several other studios, locally and internationally. I’ve been lucky enough to have experience on shows like Mucha Lucha and George Of The Jungle and a few others spanning most of the major cartoon networks.

My work focus has slowly travelled in circles. When I was very young I just wanted to draw cartoons of any kind, inspired by classic Looney Tunes and Disney animation. In high school I had brief aspirations to work in comics. In university my personal work centred around drawing comic strips. Bill Amend (FoxTrot), Jim Toomey (Sherman’s Lagoon), Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) and of course the venerable Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) were my canon. My own strip at the time, Jungle Jazz, was published in the weekly university paper for a little over two years until I graduated in 2001. Eager to pursue a career in syndicated comics Jungle Jazz was submitted to (and rejected by) Creators Press Syndicate that same year. Publishing comics online never occurred to me. At the time I don’t even think real high speed internet had been rolled out in Dartmouth. I decided a better way to make a living with my pencil was to take another serious look into animation.

Now, the bulk of my contract work is back to illustration, though I still do some small animated projects. Starcrossed is a return to my love of comic strips. The popularity and freedom of publishing comics online rekindled my interest in comics and provided the opportunity for an audience. I also think the time was right creatively. Writing and drawing Starcrossed is easily the highlight of my week.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as we talk to Onezumi and Harknell about Intervention Con and the webcomics Stupid and Insane Defenders Against Chaos & My Annoying Life . Thanks to all!

INTERVENTION CONVENTION BRINGS CYBER-LIFE TO REAL LIFE

Event brings creators and fans together for weekend of learning and fun

ROCKVILLE, MD, June 14, 2011: Intervention, taking place at the Hilton Washington DC/Rockville in Rockville, MD, from September 16-18, 2011, is an indie creator and geek culture convention for the Internet generation. One part conference, one part fandom event, Intervention aims to provide both creators and fans a venue to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the opportunities technology provides.

“James [Harknell] and I wanted to put together an event that would complement the existing print- centric conventions – we wanted to showcase the creators who use the Internet as their primary publishing method,” says convention founder Onezumi Hartstein. “I went to conventions for years to promote my webcomic, and was always treated well, but felt that web creators needed their own space. We’re giving them that with Intervention.” After a very successful first run in 2010, this year will mark Hartstein’s second time organizing the event.

Over thirty guests are currently scheduled to attend, bringing three days of panels and educational workshops. Fans of all stripes are also encouraged to submit their own cutting-edge programming, showcase their own works, and schedule their own meetups at the event. A special track of children’s programming will be overseen by Matt Blum, managing editor of the GeekDad blog on Wired.com.

Sponsored by Think Geek (www.thinkgeek.com), Wacom (www.wacom.com), Foam Brain Games (www.foambrain.com), SmithMicro (www.smithmicro.com), 4Imprint (www.4imprint.com), Squishable (www.squishable.com), and Toy Vault (www.toyvault.com), the convention will also feature video and board gaming, an extensive Artist Alley, live action roleplay (LARP), musical performances, a Steampunk-themed dance, and plenty of giveaways. A charity auction will benefit the Electronic Frontier Foundation (www.eff.org), a civil liberties group that aims to defend freedom on the Internet.

Tickets for Intervention can be bought athttp://www.interventioncon.com/register for $40 for the full weekend (through August 31, 2011). Tickets bought at the door will cost $45, with single-day rates available. More information about guests and events can be found athttp://www.interventioncon.com.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as Brian Dunaway (briandunaway.com)  talks to Mike Norton of BattlePug about his comic and career. Thanks to all!

Battlepug: The Web Comic was born out of desperate scramble to appease iFanboy. They contacted Mike to create a signature t-shirt for a new line of merch. However, Mike had been working exclusively with DC Comics for 4 years and had no original properties that he could reveal to the world yet. He drew the image you see above and had Allen color it. And lo, a BATTLEPUG was born!

THE CREATORS

Mike Norton – Writer/Artist
Mike Norton has been working in comics for over 10 years now, gaining recognition for projects such as The Waiting Place and Jason and the Argobots, Voltron, Queen and Country, Gravity, Runaways, All-New Atom, Green Arrow/Black Canary, and Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam. He is currently the artist of Young Justice for DC Comics. He is also very, very tall.

Allen Passalaqua – Color Artist
Allen is a San Francisco based digital artist, Photographer and Comic Book Color Artist. His coloring work includes Justice Socity of America, Spiderman, Green Arrow and Black Canary, Detective Comics and many others. He is not as tall as Mike.

Special thanks go to:

Chris Crank – Letterer/Editing pal, Brion Salazar – Website developer (Sorry if Mike messed it up, Sal!), Josh Emmons - Technical Go-To-Guy, & iFanboy for forcing Mike to come up with something so silly on the spot.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as Brian Dunaway (briandunaway.com) , Joel Duggan (StarCrossedOnline) and Denver Brubaker (thecheckeredman.com) talk to Dan Thompson of Rip Haywire about his comic and career. Thanks to all!

Rip Haywire is a soldier of fortune, a contemporary adventure hero in the classic mold: a brave, square-jawed man of honor who lives for danger. He’s also a bit of a lug. Accompanied on random adventures by his cowardly dog TNT and his venomous ex-girlfriend Cobra, Rip tracks down lost treasure, takes down madmen and takes on any job that promises heart-pounding action, peril and intrigue! And, of course, cash. For Rip Haywire and his pals, every adventure can turn into a surf-and-turf platter of nonstop trouble — or it can just deal with the everyday hazards of a life lived to the max. Rip Haywire is an action-packed, silly send-up of the adventure comic strip that takes readers on a roller-coaster ride across the globe and shows how even studly mercenaries get yelled at by their mothers.

Join us this week on Comics Coast To Coast as Brian Dunaway (briandunaway.com) , Joel Duggan (StarCrossedOnline) and Denver Brubaker (thecheckeredman.com) talk to Mary Varn of NPC Comic about her comic and career. Thanks to all!

A little about Mary Varn from here website:

Hi! I’m Mary. I’m a freelance animator in New York City. I started NPC (Non-Player Character) in Feb 2009 as a weekly strip when I realized I was playing too much World of Warcraft and wanted a creative outlet between freelance jobs. I’m having a ton of fun making NPC, and increased the update schedule to Mon-Wed-Fri in the summer of 2009. I don’t make a living off the comic, but it supplements my freelance income and makes me very happy. My animation gigs have included MTV’s DJ and the Fro, Disney’s Little Einsteins, and the Richard Linklater films Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. I grew up as an Air Force brat in the American south and Germany. Miscellaneous trivia: I was born in Italy, I’m vegan, and work mostly on a mac. I live in Brooklyn, NY with my boyfriend, John, and two cuddly monsters disguised as Siamese cats. No, the cats are not vegan. My favorite video games include WoW, Portal, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Civ 2, and Minecraft. I also get a kick out of playing board games and D&D. Favorite board games include Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Small World.

I update the blog under the comic with NPC news, sketch previews, reader polls, and random geekery. My personal blog is Varnacular.com.
